On the Easel

The piece was based on a photo shoot in the Black Hills of South Dakota in August of 2023 at the Kohler Ranch. The subjects are Lakota Sioux dressed in historically accurate garb and with proper accoutrements from the 1870’s. I have entitled this piece, which is an oil painting, 24”X30” on Belgium linen, “Hot Pursuit – Empty Quivers”. The beauty and majesty of the Black Hills is replete with underlying tales of the struggle of the Native American Plains tribes. The Sioux people were regarded for their horsemanship and warrior prowess.

A rough sketch after design and composition has been determined.

Adding color to the underpainting and defining values.
The piece approximately 90% complete. A few more details will be done – the doeskin britches, some of the horse’s tack needs better definition and foreground with grasses, etc.
